"Every performance was thoughtful, idiomatic, and meticulously prepared. Her equipment is formidable, and she knows what she is doing and why.”
New York Times
“Ms. Christian is a complete musician, an elegant and charismatic soloist. Yet, quite uncommon outside of Spain, I found her to be a soulful interpreter of Spanish music, unusually sensitive to its rhythms and nuances.”
José Greco
“Ms. Christian is a born performer and an unusually discerning musician.”
Claudio Arrau
Pianist Sally Christian
Sally Christian, a California native, has appeared as soloist with the Berkeley Symphony, Santa Cruz Symphony, the Fresno Philharmonic, the Nassau Symphony (Long Island), the Mozart in Monterey Chamber Orchestra, the Hawaii Symphony and with the Elmhurst Symphony (Chicago,) to name a few. In addition, she toured as guest soloist extensively throughout Mexico with the Xalapa Symphony. Among her numerous recitals are two highly successful Carnegie Hall appearances. Her intense interest in Spanish music led to an invitation from José Greco, famed flamenco dancer, to perform as a soloist with the José Greco Dance Company in 1988. The pair teamed up again with José Greco II in 1996 with a gala event, “Viva la Musica” at Davies Symphony Hall. Sr. Greco has termed Ms. Christian, “a soulful interpreter of Spanish music.”
Ms. Christian was on the California Arts Council Touring Roster for the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons. She records for Classical West Records. Her most recent CD features the complete Iberia of Albeniz, which she performed as a benefit recital for the Marin Symphony at San Francisco’s Palace of the Legion of Honor in 2006. In 1995, she was commissioned to record the complete piano works of San Francisco composer, Gordon Getty. Her all-Ravel CD, released in 1994, received critical acclaim. To quote from The Audio Adventure, “Sally Christian brings the work of Maurice Ravel to brilliant life… the way Ravel might have played it himself.” Her second release was Bach’s “Goldberg Variations”. All recordings and digital downloads are available at www.CDBaby.com/SallyChristian.
Ms. Christian received her Master’s Degree in Piano Performance from California State University in Fresno studying with Philip Lorenz as the recipient of the Amparo Iturbi Scholarship in piano. She also studied at Stanford University, and privately with Claudio Arrau. She resides in San Rafael with her husband, Dr. Ron Friedman, and enjoys a private piano practice.
